چکیده

This note is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by the relativistic Maxwell-Newton-Lorentz equations, which describes the motion of charges particles in electro-magnetic fields and consists of a hyperbolic PDE system coupled with a nonlinear ODE. An external magnetic field acts as control variable. Additional control constraints are incorporated by introducing a scalar magnetic potential which leads to an additional state equation in form of a very weak elliptic PDE. Existence and uniqueness for the state equation is shown and the existence of a global optimal control is established. Moreover, first-order necessary optimality conditions in form of Karush-KuhnTucker conditions are derived. A numerical test illustrates the theoretical findings.

Optimization with the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations as constraints

In this paper, optimal distributed control of the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations is considered. The control problem involves the minimization of a measure of the distance between the velocity field and a given target velocity field. A mixed numerical method involving a quasi-Newton algorithm, a novel calculation of the gradients and an inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes solver, to find the opt...

Relativistic Generalization and Extension to the Non-Abelian Gauge Theory of Feynman’s Proof of the Maxwell Equations

R.P. Feynman showed F.J. Dyson a proof of the Lorentz force law and the homogeneous Maxwell equations, which he obtained starting from Newton’s law of motion and the commutation relations between position and velocity for a single nonrelativistic particle. We formulate both a special relativistic and a general relativistic versions of Feynman’s derivation. Especially in the general relativistic...

On the initial-value problem of the Maxwell-Lorentz equations

We consider the Maxwell-Lorentz equations, i.e., the equation of motion of a charged dust coupled to Maxwell’s equations, on an arbitrary general-relativistic spacetime. We decompose this system of equations into evolution equations and constraints, and we demonstrate that the evolution equations are strongly hyperbolic. This result guarantees that the initial-value problem of the Maxwell-Loren...

Towards the Unity of Classical Physics

The unity of classical mechanics and electromagnetism is proposed to be established through putting both on equal footing. The special-relativistic equations of motion for the particles and fields, the Maxwell-Lorentz force, and the Yukawa potential are derived exploiting Newton’s and Euler’s (stationary-)state descriptions, Newton’s decomposition of forces into bodyand position-dependent facto...

From Feynman Proof of Maxwell Equations to Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics

In 1990, Dyson published a proof due to Feynman of the Maxwell equations assuming only the commutation relations between position and velocity. With this minimal assumption, Feynman never supposed the existence of Hamiltonian or Lagrangian formalism. In the present communication, we review the study of a relativistic particle using “Feynman brackets.” We show that Poincaré’s magnetic angular mo...
